I wonder, why isn't there a copy of the mailing list archives on
Gmane [1]?

NNTP is just out of competition for accessing such archives, and
it makes it easy to replicate a part or the whole of a mailing
list's archive at one's own host (for off-line reading, or
Internet-independent searching, or pretty much anything.)

It takes virtually no effort to configure mailing list to Gmane
and vice versa forwarding, but, IIUC, it requires an explicit
mailing list's owner action to replicate the messages already
posted at Gmane.

Actually this would be a fantastic thing for a random community member to do - you just need to enter the request on gmane's site and then provide them with a nicer version of the archives from http://lists.bestpractical.com/pipermail/prophet/ - I've done this many times for various lists I wanted to access via gmane. Note that adding archives can take a while as gmane admins are usually pretty overworked.
