I have run RT on Ubuntu since 8.04. I recently upgraded from
3.4.8 to 4.0.17 and found it much easier to install it from
sources on 12.04 than use the repositories.

I would suggest a clean 12.04 and install from source.
Just my 2 cents...

If you haven't started yet and it is at all possible, you should get a newer version of Ubuntu going. Support for 9.10 ended about two years ago.
12.04 is a "long term support" release that will keep getting updates until late 2017. By that time you will hopefully have upgraded to 14.04, which will be the next LTS release.

Subject: [rt-users] RT-4.2.0 on Ubuntu 9.10
Hello all,
I'm new to RT but familiar with Ubuntu system and programming stuff.
I got Ubuntu 9.10 running and I was wondering/hoping if I can install RT-4.2.0?
Or do I need latest version on Ubuntu to run RT-4.2.0?
Or should I just download the binaries and compile it from source?
Any feedback will be highly appreciated.

Nitesh
