Personally, I've given up on Module::Install completely.  It seemed to have a lot of promise initially, but I've discovered some surprisingly simple things are apparently impossible.  If they have stupidly decided that version objects won't be supported in M::I at all, then that is yet another reason to chuck it in favor of Module::Build.

FWIW, Andreas has made sure that PAUSE and CPAN can handle version objects and I've supplied support for version objects in recent Module::Build releases (0.28+), so there is no reason to let M::I limitations hinder you.
