I'm guessing here, but I think this could be because the CPAN module has
noticed that the most-recently released version of a module it needs is
in the Perl 5.8 distribution.  The was a flurry of this kind of thing
shortly after 5.8's release.

I believe this resulted in CPAN being upgraded; try upgrading to the
latest CPAN first then trying again.
