Maybe running "wget" 1000 times in a cycle would give you a hint 
in the process list?

Perl profiling (http://www.perldoc.com/perl5.8.0/lib/Devel/DProf.html) 
would be nice to use, but I can't get a clue how to use it for 
Mason under mod_perl.
