Jim makes a good point: you didn't specify which version of Perl you DO have.
If you are using Sun's version then it's 5.0.ancient!  =:o()

While you are at http://www.sunfreeware.com getting your Perl, get the 'tar' package they have also.  It has a bug fix and also reads directly from gzipped tars.
