[rt-users] Fresh Install of rt3.8.1 on Ubuntu 8.04 missing required components on Configure step

Have you installed GCC? I think Ubuntu doesnät install developer tools 
etc. by default.

I think sudo apt-get install gcc will do the trick... Or at least get 
rid of that particular error message.
