RT is his baby and he has the right to nurse the project until he deems it fit for release. I think and most of you will probably agree that this is the "right" way to develop software. I admire him for this. Tobix, on the other hand, is responsible for customizing and maintaining rt at FunCom, and has dedicated countless hours of his time to the project, in all areas. He is a practical, hardworking person with a job to do and internal deadlines to meet, promises to keep. I personally am in a similiar situation as Tobix (i think :). I've installed RT1 at my current place of employment, and everyone is satisfied with the the current product, but there are a number of feature requests which have been made by the management/employees that would improve everybodys satisfaction with the product. Mostly minor changes, but important changes (to us) nonetheless. These features are promised in RT2, but if i can't deliver them sooner than that deadline, there is the chance that we'l be forced to 'upgrade' to an obscenely priced, closed source commercial system, in which case my employer will not pay me to work on RT , and RT looses a supporter. . While i can understand the positions of both parties, I'm more sympathetic to Tobix's perspective. Projects mature more quickly in the wild than they do in a sterile environment. (ALA The Cathedral and the Bazaar , though it pains me to reference ESR;) You can not deliver a project early without bugs, and its easier to find the bugs and shortcomings from user feedback. Where would Linux be if Linus was still in his basement hacking assembly, waiting for the day when the kernel was perfect? NT would be dominant , and RMS still would not have a workable release of HURD out the door.. The advantage is that I can use our distributed authentication system (kerberos, via pam_krb5 etc). The disadvantage is that I have no good way of expiring logins, like one would if one were using cookies. Because HTTP doesn't support logouts, once someone logs in, they stay logged in until the browser is closed. My wishlist for RT would include the ability to do initial authentication via external auth mechanisms, but to have RT generate and track authentication cookies to enable session expiry/logouts. --Joe From bogus@does.not.exist.com Thu Oct 13 11:38:50 2022 From: bogus@does.not.exist.com () Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2022 15:38:50 -0000 Subject: No subject Message-ID: >> Creating a queue also always errors out when copying the templates, << I think we had this problem too, but it has been quite a while since we created a new queue. There is a lot of embedded requires within functions which causes code to be loaded at run time, rather than at apache startup time. By making perl code load up at start time, you get the benefit of sharing the memory needed for it. Ideally, any code that is often used within RT *should* be loaded by the webmux script. That is, anywhere you see a "use XXX" within modules that WebRT needs, those should also be in the startup script. Speaking of "use ..." lines, it seems that some of the code assumes that this happens at run time not compile time. (The segfault can probably be ignored - I see it a lot in mod_perl stuff when apache is signal handling or closing down (after an alarm or 'child termination' due to lower load etc.) - I often see it in unloading DBI and other XS stuff, but it's after any user activity is finished, so I don't let it bother me.) I saw something strikingly similar with our RT install last week: a user complained that they couldn't access RT (display tickets etc.). Other users were fine (including myself). Our set up is a bit different to most probably - we're accessing our intranet (and RT) through a special kind of reverse proxy with SSL on both sides, which also stores the RT session cookies in the proxy (our product!), so I could trace the activity both inside and outside the web server. We have plenty of other apps on our intranet servers to test as well. I cleared the Apache::Session for the RT users (we use RT with apache authentication), and restarted various stuff, but the same basic problem - the user couldn't get the display screen up. strace on the intranet and the proxy showed the same basic cause - RT/apache is waiting for more browser input (our proxy agreed - more browser input was expected) but the browser never sent it. The problem only occured on 'POST' pages (including ticket display from 'GoTo Ticket' etc.), not on GET pages. POST to other intranet applications on the same server worked fine (for big and small content), and other users were also fine. I tried logging in as the affected user from my browser, and that was also fine! The RT and security gateway session managers were ruled out, as was the user's database info. The user was using Win2K with Netscape and Mozilla through a local solaris firewall. Sometimes I've seen firewalls with over-zealous ICMP restrictions (which affects path-mtu discovery) from breaking connections when large packets are used (e.g. ssh is fine, but scp breaks!), but this didn't seem to be a problem. We are using ssl for all traffic, so its not a proxy or httpd caching problem. I got the user to try IE (5.5 I think) on the same machine, and they got in OK! Doh! (They forgot later this week and used mozilla again - same problem, so its nothing intermittent). I tested as this user from my Netscape & Mozilla browsers, except I'm using linux, and that was also fine. Anyway, I think there's some kind of quite specific browser-based dependency in RT and/or mod_perl (or even mod_ssl?) which is causing httpd to expect more input when there isn't any coming, which causes httpd to sit in a (never terminating) read until the global timeout. Because the apache::session is locked, other RT requests (e.g. from stop/reload etc.) will also get blocked until the 5 minute timeout releases the session lock. This looks much like Calvin's problem (especially as he's also using SSL - check the trace!) and Jesse asked about browser type breakdown, so I'm hoping he has a candidate for the problem! This is on RT 2.0.7, which we've had installed for quite a while, without previous incident. Then testing whether RT will run there, I'll do a dummy setup. Just install the same version of RT as I have on the old system. If it installs fine, then try accessing it (with the root user) and clicking a few things here and there just to make sure they are working. If you see much success, then I guess it's time to blow it away (rm -rf rt2 directory) Step2: Setup up your aliases (for the rt e-mail addresses) on the new server. Don't Don't fire the MTA up as yet. Step3: Backup your rt directory (cd /opt && tar -cZf rt2.tgz rt2) and move it to the new server (same destination) and extract it. That way you have preserved all permissions. You even have all your customizations intact. On the new server extract your rt2 to the correct location (tar zxvf rt2.tgz). Step3: Backup your rt2 database and move it over. (substitute your real values for RT_USER and RT_USER_PASS) `mysqldump --opt rt2 > backup-rt2.sql` Move backup-rt2.sql to the new server. Login to the new server as root, create the rt2 database. `mysqladmin create rt2` Setup the correct permissions for your RT_USER; something like GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, INDEX ON rt2.* TO RT_USER at localhost IDENTIFIED by 'RT_USER_PASS'; flush privileges; NB: Please verify the granted perms by login to my sql and doing this query: show grants for RT_USER at localhost; You can then restore the tables and the data back into MySQL with: mysql database < backup-file.sql Step5: If I haven't missed something, then it's time to fire up all applications and see if your RT is up and running. As a side note: Life would be easier if you were to RETIRE the old server. You could just move the old disk onto the new server or create the new server from the old disk. If both disks are ATA (say), [This is from FreeBSD's point because I am not familiar with linux], I'd do a minimal install on the new disk (reflecting similar partitions on old disk), then mount the new disk into the old machine and write all data from old disk into new disk. After that, all I've have to do is change a few params on fstab and rc.conf on the new disk, mount it on the new machine and boot it up. I create a new partition with the necessary slices. I mount them on my old system /mnt/newsystem. Write the new using the old rather than copy the old on top of a temporary new. Off the top of my head I would type the command line: # dump 0af - / | ( cd /mnt ; restore -rf - ) # dump 0af - /var | ( cd /mnt/var ; restore -rf - ) # dump 0af - /usr | ( cd /mnt/usr ; restore -rf - ) 5) edit and change your /etc/fstab file to reflect the new changes, save it, move the new disk into the new server and reboot! Hi Washington,

From the top of my head (untested)
Step1: Ensure the new system has all the = prerequisites for RT.
       I'll setup the = Web Server, MySQL server (and even the MTA) and make sure
       they are = running well.

       Then testing = whether RT will run there, I'll do a dummy setup. Just install
       the same = version of RT as I have on the old system. If it installs fine, = then
       try accessing = it (with the root user) and clicking a few things here and there
       just to make = sure they are working. If you see much success, then I guess = it's
       time to blow it = away (rm -rf rt2 directory)

Step2: Setup up your aliases (for the rt e-mail = addresses) on the new server. Don't
       Don't fire the = MTA up as yet.

Step3: Backup your rt directory (cd /opt && = tar -cZf rt2.tgz rt2) and move it to
       the new server = (same destination) and extract it. That way you have preserved
       all = permissions. You even have all your customizations intact. On the new = server
       extract your = rt2 to the correct location (tar zxvf rt2.tgz).

Step3: Backup your rt2 database and move it over. = (substitute your real values for RT_USER
       and = RT_USER_PASS)

       `mysqldump --opt = rt2 > backup-rt2.sql`

       Move = backup-rt2.sql to the new server.
       Login to the = new server as root, create the rt2 database.

       `mysqladmin = create rt2`

       Setup the = correct permissions for your RT_USER; something like

       GRANT SELECT, = INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, INDEX ON rt2.* TO RT_USER at localhost = IDENTIFIED by 'RT_USER_PASS';
       flush = privileges;

       NB: Please = verify the granted perms by login to my sql and doing this = query:

       show grants for = RT_USER at localhost;

       You can then = restore the tables and the data back into MySQL with:

       mysql database = < backup-file.sql

Step5: If I haven't missed something, then it's time = to fire up all applications and see if your RT is
        up and = running.

As a side note: Life would be easier if you were to = RETIRE the old server. You could just
move the old disk onto the new server or create the = new server from the old disk. If both
disks are ATA (say), [This is from FreeBSD's point = because I am not familiar with linux],
I'd do a minimal install on the new disk (reflecting = similar partitions on old disk), then
mount the new disk into the old machine and write = all data from old disk into new disk.
After that, all I've have to do is change a few = params on fstab and rc.conf on the new disk,
mount it on the new machine and boot it up.

I create a new partition with  the necessary = slices. I mount them on my old
system /mnt/newsystem.
Write the new using the old rather than copy the old = on top of a temporary new.

Off the top of my head I would type the command = line:

# dump 0af - / | ( cd /mnt ; restore -rf - )
# dump 0af - /var | ( cd /mnt/var ; restore -rf - = )
# dump 0af - /usr | ( cd /mnt/usr ; restore -rf - = )

5) edit and change your /etc/fstab file to reflect = the new changes, save it, move the
   new disk into the new server and = reboot!

Donate the old server to charity!

= (substitute your real values for RT_USER
       and = RT_USER_PASS)

       `mysqldump --opt = rt2 > backup-rt2.sql`

       Move = backup-rt2.sql to the new server.
       Login to the = new server as root, create the rt2 database.

       `mysqladmin = create rt2`

       Setup the = correct permissions for your RT_USER; something like

       GRANT SELECT, = INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, INDEX ON rt2.* TO RT_USER at localhost = IDENTIFIED by 'RT_USER_PASS';
       flush = privileges;

       NB: Please = verify the granted perms by login to my sql and doing this = query:

       show grants for = RT_USER at localhost;

Just my $ 0.02

Hi,

I've just spent an exciting few days moving our RT installation from Red Hat 7.0, RT 2.0.14, with a pile of CPAN installed with chewing gum and straw, to Red Hat 8.0, RT 3.0.0 (on httpd 2.0.40, mod_perl 1.99 and postgresql 7.3.2). Atually most of it went smoothly, I would highly recommend cpan2rpm for those package management control freaks ( http://perl.arix.com/cpan2rpm/man.html ). After installing the new rt3 code, and running make initialize-database, I can create tickets from the web interface and from rt-mailgate. Then I did a make dropdb (to clear out these dummy tickets) and make initialize-database again. I used rt2-to-rt3 1.7 to dump the old database from the old machine, and reimported it without errors into the new database. Now, I've logged in with the username and password from rt2 (so the import must have worked), and checked my ACLs: Everyone can CreateTicket, CommentOnTicket, ReplyToTicket, and SeeQueue Requestor can ShowTicket staff can ModifyTicket, OwnTicket, ShowTicket, ShowTicketComments, Watch, WatchAsAdminCC and finally, my own user has most of the other rights enabled. I create the ticket by clicking on the New ticket in button, and pressing Create on the next page. It seems this problem is really related to FastCGI as it doesn't happen with mod_perl. I guess the Apache::Session module name doesn't start with Apache:: for nothing. I didn't tested this with SpeedyCGI -- by the way, can someone send a working speedycgi setup on RedHat 8 or 9 ?

But well, as Red Hat's mod_perl truncates POST uploads (even on 8.0, just checked it)... choose what you prefer : no attachment or errors ?

I'm fairly sure this has been covered on this list, as well as being in the sendmail docs. seph From bogus@does.not.exist.com Thu Oct 13 11:38:50 2022 From: bogus@does.not.exist.com () Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2022 15:38:50 -0000 Subject: No subject Message-ID: non-existing users based on an external web-auth.. But what if I don't have an external auth (like LDAP) to use here. I just want existing pre-made user accounts (unprivileged users) to be able to create tickets via email... how do I go about doing that? Furthermore, if this can be done, it shall reduce the amount of spam I foresee getting once I put this address on the website :) Please help. Thanks! However, when programming handlers, there are always better ways to access these variables through the Apache API. Therefore, it is recommended to turn it Off except for scripts which absolutely require it. See PerlSetupEnv Off. RT apparently requires it. This really needs to be in the documentation. And there's the catch really - can't disable a production system and can't do it to a development system because its not in use like the production one. Andy. (RT 3.0.6) Can I somehow integrate an external database of users, without just copying the data to RT? Of course, not all users will be in the external db, so I'd have to have some fallback to internal RT and to creating users on the fly. Alternatively (but not quite as cool) would be to create users on the fly. Yes, I know RT does this, but it always sets the Name =3D Email when doing so. For me, the login name (we use an external auth method) is related to, but not identical, to the email address for most of my users. So I'd need to modify either User_Overlay.pm::LoadOrCreateByEmail() or User_Overlay.pm::Create() in order to cannonicallize the Name. Which I would do, presumably in User_Local.pm, except that I only want to make a tiny change, and not have to override a large subroutine. Well, any suggestions would be welcome. bobg =20 _______________________________________________ rt-users mailing list rt-users at lists.fsck.com http://lists.fsck.com/mailman/listinfo/rt-users Have you read the FAQ?
