Correct. you either need hard links or to enable FollowSymLink

You can put the SQL server on a seperate machine, but for RT1, all
client apps (the mail gateway, the web app and the cli tools) need
to be able to read from and write to RT's directories.  you can do this 
with NFS mounts if you want....  One idea might be to set up the webserver
to be able to accept mail from the mail server and have the mail server forward
mail for RT to the webserver.
