[rt-users] sendmail making noises at me

That really doesn't sound like sendmail 8. 
What _exact_ version of sendmail are you running?

Unless it's a recentish sendmail inc sendmail (aka berkeley sendmail)
I suggest you use the simplified sendmail options per the Makefile.
